There was nothing out of the ordinary about Tuesday September 11, 2001when morning alarm clocks went off. As the morning continued America found that everything became out of the ordinary. Most everyone you talk to remember where they were on September 11, 2001 when the world changed. This day proved to be the bloodiest day on American soil since the Civil War. This war however was not fought by the Army or Marines of the United States but by the office workers, fire fighters, police, and everyday common people.
Tuesday September 11, 2001 was a beautiful morning about 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. American Airlines flight 11 took off at 7:59 A.M. from Boston with 81 passengers on board. The flight was supposed to be headed for Los Angeles, California. The plane heading west turned toward the east and headed for New York City. As this plane headed for New York three other planes from two other locations took off. The United States had no idea what was about to happen. We had no idea that terrorists were among us and that for some they were seated next to them on their flights. The first hijacked plane hit the World Trade Center’s north tower at 8:45 A.M. just 46 minutes after take off. The sound was something no one had heard before. Flames began to pour from the top floors of the building as people tried to figure out what was going on. Once the sirens started people began to panic. The people in the building tried to escape and the people on the ground tried to help. As the people ran from the building fire fighters ran into the burning building. The panicked people ran, helped others, and called relatives the second hijacked plane headed toward the City. The second plane hit the south tower of the World Trade Center at 9:06 A.M. The president of the United States, President Bush was reading a book at the time to elementary school children in Florida. He quickly left to deal with this terrorist attack. By now Americans knew this was no accident but an attack on America. As the terror continued American Airlines flight 77 hit the Pentagon at 9:40 A.M. which was supposed to hit the White House. At 10:00 A.M. the south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed and at 10:29 A.M. the north tower collapsed. People all over the country knew by now what was happening and were in shock. 10:37 A.M. United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a Pennsylvania field. Finally, at 5:25 P.M. the third building of the World Trade Center fell to its death. This was a day of total chaos and panic not only in New York but everywhere. Buildings were evacuated, flights cancelled, schools closed, and basically the country shut down.
The President went on the television to try to calm the American people and inform them of what had happened. By that night we were confident that these were terror attacks and they were tied to Bin Laden. Bin Laden was a name many had not heard before but that has surely changed.
Every American was affected that day by this act of terrorism. Sherri Ray, my mom, remembers exactly where she was that Tuesday morning. She is a teacher at St. Margaret Middle School where she was teaching her sixth grade class that morning. It was a normal morning at school and as usual there were no televisions on. A parent had called the school in a panic to say what had taken place. So not to panic everyone in the school one teacher who was free when door to door and whispered in the teachers ear what was happening. She said it was hard to understand what all of this meant and it was hard to not react to the news. The teacher told her they would be dismissing as soon as parents arrived for their children. My mother tried to continue her lesson as nothing had happened until students started to be called from the rooms for dismissal. She then knew she had to tell the curious students something. She said the hardest part was trying to explain something to eleven year old children that she didn’t yet understand. When all of the students finally were picked up she was allowed to leave and get my brother and I from the other campus. Not knowing what to do she drove us to my aunts house where she and my aunt watched the TV. She said it seemed like hours they just sat and watched in disbelief. The scariest part my mom said was not knowing what would happen next and where it would happen. My family has always been very patriotic because my dad is a Marine. He had already fought one war at the time but it was before I was born. This event, my mom said, made all Americans patriotic. Everyday people became heroes and America changed forever.
On September 11, 2001 the opening of the New York Stock Exchange was delayed and later cancelled for the day. It did not reopen until the following Monday. This was one of the many short term affects of the 9/11 terror attacks. The NASDAQ also cancelled trading for the day. Gold, Oil, and gas prices went up, but lasted only a short time. The American dollar lost value at the news of the attacks. The three days following the attacks the Federal Reserve added $100. billion per day in liquidity. The hardest hit industries were insurance and Airline industries. Insurance losses were huge and hard to pay for by the companies. Airlines were grounded which put airlines in danger of going out of business. Tourism especially in New York was another area that was greatly impacted. Even though large amounts of money was needed to increase security the fear of a financial crisis never truly happened. Many Acts were passed and new agencies were created like the Transportation Security Agency (TSA). Unemployment rose as many lost their places of business and small business owners were not able to remain open.
The impact economically was not as great as the impact the attacks had on the people of the United States. The Americans began the support the War on Terror. Afghanistan was invaded to find and stop the Taliban.
